Co-parented by a factory-working single mom and 80’s sitcoms, Melisa attended college at fifteen and spent her twenties as a community activist, organizing around issues from abortion rights to affirmative action to police violence. She was a named co-defendant intervenor in the landmark Supreme Court case of Grutter v Bollinger.

After transitioning to filmmaking and a stint as Hollywood’s oldest intern, she has worked as a celebrity assistant, a film and TV executive and a speechwriter and ghostwriter. Her award nominated short, The Line, premiered on DirectTV in 2018 and screened globally, including at the Edinburgh International Film Festival, SIFF, Outfest and Sundance’s 2019 AT&T Hello Lab screening.

A finalist in the Disney Launchpad Season II program, a Directing Mentee in the 2022 WIF Mentoring program, and a proud participant in AWD’s BDAI cohort, Melisa is currently writing her first feature film which she hopes to direct.

She holds a B.A. in Africana Studies from Wayne State University and an M.S. from DePaul University’s Digital Cinema program.
