From First Break to Lasting Impact: Building Creative Pipelines in Film & Media
As reported in Variety, the Alliance of Women Directors is proud to join NewFilmmakers Los Angeles, Shine Global, and Creating Creators for an Official panel at the 2026 Sundance Film Festival focused on one of the most urgent issues facing independent film today: filmmaker sustainability. As consolidation, shifting business models, and rapid technological change continue to reshape the industry, From First Break to Lasting Impact: Building Creative Pipelines in Film & Media reframes success beyond individual projects, asking how filmmakers can build careers that endure. The panel will take place Sunday, January 25, 2026, from 1:30–3:00 PM MT at the Filmmaker Lodge in Park City, UT.
Moderated by Sola Fasehun (The Distribution Collective), the conversation brings together leaders actively building solutions across the creative ecosystem. Panelists include our very own Executive Director of Alliance of Women Directors, Kylie Eaton, as well as Gianfranco Fernández-Ruiz (NFMLA Ambassador and award-winning filmmaker), Alexandra Blaney (Co-CEO & Creative Director, Shine Global), and Jessica Just (CEO & Co-Founder, Creating Creators). Drawing on real-world models of mentorship, professional development, funding access, and community-building, the panel will explore how intentional career pipelines can support artists from early discovery through long-term sustainability and legacy. At a moment when many creators are struggling to navigate shrinking opportunities and an increasingly fragmented industry, this conversation underscores a critical truth: if we do not invest in sustainable creative careers now, we risk losing an entire generation of storytellers. From First Break to Lasting Impact aligns with Sundance’s longstanding commitment not only to discovering new voices, but to nurturing the communities and institutions that help those voices thrive over time.
