Rae walked us through tips and techniques that helped us reframe our thoughts and take practical steps towards conceptualizing our short films. Her book is a great addition to my film library but having the pleasure of going through a mini-workshop really helped spark my imagination. AWD Virtual Script Readings

At our latest AWD Virtual Reading Program, participants experienced the power of live collaboration and adaptability. This session included the scripts “Tag, You’re It!” by Jan Johnson Goldberger (Writer/Director) and
“The Cutoff” by Lesley Powers (Writer/Director)
The event highlighted how essential strong casting is—not just in preparation, but in flexibility—as one actor stepped in cold to read the lead role of the first script and delivered a powerful performance with zero prep time.
The reading emphasized the importance of table reads for writer/directors, offering a chance to hear their dialogue out loud and receive real-time feedback from both actors and audience members.
Attendees learned how audience reactions—especially from industry professionals in attendance—can guide rewrites, clarify tone, and sharpen character arcs.
We were thrilled by the talent and generosity of all the performers and can’t wait to welcome them back for future readings!
“I wanted to thank you so much for supporting Tag, You’re It! I’m so glad you chose this script. I didn’t realize how well written it is until last night. I really appreciate your support! it’s encouraged me to move forward to get the project financed!” – Jan Johnson-Goldberger
“Thank you so so much for last night, I’ve been on a high ever since! The cast brought the words to life bigger and better than I could’ve ever imagined. I appreciate you choosing The Cutoff for the program. AWD rocks!” – Lesley Powers
