Daughter of an immigrant father and American mother, Jianna Maarten Saada had a complex childhood and credits feeling ‘always the outsider’ with leading her to filmmaking. She got her degrees in storytelling at Columbia University’s prestigious creative writing program and AFI’s Directing MFA, directing over fourteen shorts with over 150 international festivals under her belt. Her twenty-five minute thesis film Sin Cielo took home the Grand Jury Prize at Seattle International Film Festival, Grand Jury, Audience Award and Best of Fest at Ivy Film Festival, the young Jury Prize at Palm Springs, the Bruce Corwin Jury Prize at Santa Barbara Film Festival, the Audience Award at Champs Elyseés Film Festival, and was a 2020 Oscar contender, currently being distributed by Salaud Morissett on HBO North America (and Europe), Kanopy, Aftenposen, and other channels.
Critics say Saada has a “masterful way of framing scenes to create emotion” and called Sin Cielo “a piece of work that defies criticism and should be a benchmark for filmmakers with any intent on producing a piece of work that is relevant today.”
Jianna Maarten Saada is currently in development on the limited series El Otro Lado about the disappearance of women in Juarez, Deviations, a series about an all female blackjack team, and the features The Architect, a Sci-Fi psychological thriller and Good Citizen, an ensemble drama.
