After graduating with a Bachelors in Broadcast Journalism, Emily worked as a Producer and On-Air Talent for a small radio station and then as an Associate Producer for a Detroit area Urban Affairs program while earning a Master's in Communications.

Studying film from the perspectives of culture, gender, and national identity, Emily was eager to construct films of her own and moved to New York to pursue independent filmmaking. Soon after arriving in New York, she embarked on her first, "NO BUDGET" indie feature, "Connie's Place." She spent several weeks in pre-production and rehearsed her actors as if it were a stage play, telling them that once the 16mm film rolled, they would have one take only to nail their performance. She shot the tightly scheduled feature length film in eight days. The film screened in the Works in Progress section of the IFP's Film Market.

Her next feature, "Sorry Ain't Enough," was shot on the then new 24P technology and screened at several independent Film Festivals throughout the United States.

In 2017, The Talk, premiered at The Montreal International Black Film Festival, where Emily was invited to participate on a panel discussion about independent filmmaking.

Emily resides in Los Angeles where she is pursuing an MFA, developing multiple short films, a stage play and her next feature.
