AWD South presents filmmaker, Julie Dash in conversation with documentarian, Shola Lynch (Number One on the Call Sheet) preceding a screening of Dash’s seminal film, Daughters of the Dust, for the 50th Atlanta Film Festival.

Julie Dash transformed American cinema with Daughters of the Dust, becoming in 1992 the first African American woman to achieve a wide theatrical release for a feature film. Widely recognized as one of the most culturally consequential films of its year, the work redefined how Black women’s lives, histories, and visual storytelling could inhabit the screen. Its legacy has only deepened: in 2014 the film was selected for the National Film Registry, and by 2020 Sight & Sound and the British Film Institute ranked Daughters of the Dust among the 100 Greatest Films of All Time, affirming its lasting global influence.
