Virtual Production for Directors
By popular request, AWD is bringing more virtual production education to our community!
Join writer/director and virtual production specialist Katerina Munis for an introduction to one of the fastest-growing areas of filmmaking. As former Director of Productions for XR Stages, Katerina has helped support virtual productions for HBO, Lionsgate, Apple TV+, and Netflix, and has become a sought-after educator helping filmmakers navigate the creative possibilities of emerging production technologies.
Designed with directors in mind, this workshop will demystify virtual production and provide a practical overview of how stories are brought to life on LED volumes. Participants will explore the creative workflows behind virtual production, from early worldbuilding and previsualization through production and final imagery, while gaining a deeper understanding of how directors collaborate with Virtual Art Departments (VADs), cinematographers, production designers, and technical teams throughout the process.
The session will cover the fundamentals of LED volume filmmaking, including creating and integrating 2D and 3D environments, developing virtual worlds that support story and performance, and understanding the unique opportunities—and limitations—of shooting in virtual environments. Katerina will also share insights into best practices for directing on LED stages, helping filmmakers understand when virtual production is the right tool for a project and how to maximize its creative potential.
Whether you’re completely new to virtual production or looking to expand your directing toolkit, this workshop will provide a strong foundation in the language, workflows, and storytelling possibilities of this rapidly evolving technology. As an educator dedicated to empowering underrepresented filmmakers through emerging creative tools, Katerina brings both industry expertise and an accessible, filmmaker-first approach to the conversation.
