AWD South had an incredible couple of days in Atlanta this month! They were treated to an intimate workshop with Rob Hardy and a personalized tour of Tyler Perry Studios. AWD Directing Member Juliet Romeo provided a first-person account of the experience:
My brief trip to Atlanta to participate in the AWD South event at Tyler Perry Studios and the Rob Hardy workshop at Assembly Studios was incredibly fulfilling. This was my first in-person event, and I can confidently say it won’t be my last. I returned home feeling so inspired and ready to dive into my creative work. I’ve been telling everyone I meet how amazing the experience was. The private tour of Tyler Perry Studios, where our names were displayed in lights at the entrance, was particularly memorable. It was a welcoming gesture that made me feel truly acknowledged and validated as a director. Seeing our hard work recognized in such a way was incredibly rewarding.

As a disabled filmmaker, I received outstanding support from AWD. [AWD South Co-Chairs] Elise Hines and Tomeka Winborne were genuine and hands-on in ensuring I had the accessible accommodations I needed, which made all the difference in my experience.

Being surrounded by so many talented women from AWD was an incredible experience. During the Hardy workshop, I looked around the room at all these accomplished women making strides in the industry. Instead of feeling imposter syndrome, I felt inclusion, acceptance, and pride. It was proof that I belonged among these amazing women, and it filled me with pride not only for myself but also for their achievements.

This experience was the girls’ trip I didn’t know I needed, and I’m so glad I decided to go. I’m eager to not only participate in these events but also to help bring more opportunities to the women of this organization. This was an incredible experience, and I wish them continued success. I can’t wait for the next one!
