Varda Bar-Kar is a world traveler and an award-winning film director based in Santa Monica, California. As an independent filmmaker, Varda explores the breadth of the human condition on projects ranging from viral videos that have amassed tens of millions of views; short films and documentaries that have garnered awards at major festivals including Raindance, Cannes, and the Ann Arbor Film Festival; web series; feature projects and television.
Her feature documentary Big Voice chronicling a challenging year in the life of a determined high school choir director won “Best U.S. Premiere” at the Heartland Film Festival, “Best Documentary” at New Filmmakers Los Angeles and was picked up for distribution by, Netflix, Amazon Prime, and PBS. Varda’s current feature documentary project, Fandango at the Wall, weaves together musical stories of Mexico's son jarocho tradition during an unprecedented musical convergence called a Fandango at the border wall between the United States and Mexico.
Following her participation in Ryan Murphy’s Half Foundation Program, Varda has begun directing for television starting with Murphy’s hit FOX TV show 9-1-1.
