Sophie Aguila

Sophie Aguila is a bicoastal independent film director and producer. She has directed on projects based in Philadelphia, Los Angeles, New York, Chicago, and Dallas. Sophie's catalogue of narrative work recognizes multi-dimensional and empowered female and queer characters, through universal stories of art and humanity. She blends realism and fantasy, since the world can always use a little more magic.
Sophie’s projects have screened nation-wide, including at the Garden State Film Festival, the FirstGlance Los Angeles Film Festival, and the Philadelphia Latino Film Festival Youth Salon. At the 28th FirstGlance Philadelphia Film Festival, Sophie was a recipient of the Mela Hudson Award.
Sophie received her BFA in Directing from Temple University’s School of Theater, Film and Media Arts, where she simultaneously completed a BS in Music Studies. While studying, she spent time as a development intern at HIVEMIND and as a record label intern at LLC4. In her senior year, Sophie directed TUTV’s mid-Atlantic Emmy-nominated live sketch comedy broadcast TEMPLE SMASH.
She also spotlights community leaders through her independently-produced short documentaries. Currently, she is in post-production for a long-form documentary about a muralist and champion of accessible fine art who leads community projects across Philadelphia’s Chinatown.
