Mashie Alam is a Bangladeshi-Canadian writer and director. Raised between suburban Canada and frequent travel abroad, she spent much of her childhood caught between places, coping by blowing her allowance at the local video store, repeatedly renting the same femme fatale films and quietly mistaking loneliness for glamour.

Working across narrative, fashion, and commercial filmmaking, Mashie makes films about beautiful people struggling to behave normally, where beauty curdles into awkwardness, sincerity collides with satire, and emotional collapse is usually well-dressed.

Her short Two of Hearts (2024) was selected by Telefilm Canada for Canada’s Not Short On Talent and screened at Cannes’ Marché du Film, Fantastic Fest, FNC, Aesthetica, and Slamdance. Her previous short, Constant, was a Vimeo Staff Pick and was shortlisted for the Young Director Award at Cannes Lions, while her fashion short, Boredom, screened internationally, including at VIFF.

She is currently developing her debut feature, Clementine, Plus One, through the 2026 TIFF Directors’ Lab.
