April Wright loves genre and dark character material, documentaries and Americana, especially stories rooted in history or real events that involve elements of politics, conspiracy, technology, sci-fi, government, or exploring the dark side of human nature. She developed her passion for movies at a young age from family visits to the local drive-in movie theatre.
April is in prep to direct a supernatural thriller for Lionsgate digital in 2018, and is in post-production on two documentaries: one about historic Movie Palaces featuring Leonard Maltin, the other an action-documentary about Stuntwomen featuring Michelle Rodriguez. April was tapped by the El Rey Network in 2016 to create original network branding spots, and is attached to direct a darkly comedic female-driven episodic series.
In 2018, April was one of five finalists for Tribeca IF/THEN, and has been a finalist for the Sundance Screenwriting Lab, Episodic Lab, and the Women in Film / Blacklist Episodic Lab. Her first feature "Layover" premiered at Cinequest in 2009. Her first feature doc “Going Attractions: The Definitive Story of the American Drive-in Movie” featuring legendary filmmaker Roger Corman, enjoyed a theatrical release in 2013 in the US, Canada and Australia. April has programmed for Sundance and AFI Fest. She is a member of AWD, FIND, IDA, Film Fatales, and is an alumni of the Sundance Institute.
